Cornea Help funktioniert durch die Verknüpfung von Menschen, für die ein medizinischer Eingriff am Augenlicht Erfolg verspricht und mit dem sie ihre Lebenssituation direkt verbessern können. Die erfahrenen Fachärzte, wie Augenarzt Dr. Viashwanatha N. Gokhale und seine Ehefrau, Dr. Sandhya Gokhale, am „Lions Medical Centre in Mombasa, Kenia, oder Dr. Ciku Mathenge und Dr. John Nkurkiye am „Ruanda International Institute of Ophthalmology, Kigali, Ruanda stehen für Cornea-Help und seine Patienten zur Verfügung. An ausgewählten KandidatInnen/PatientInnen für die eine Operation Erfolg verspricht, organisiert und finanziert Cornea-Help die medizinischen Untersuchungen, die stationäre Behandlung, die Nachbehandlung sowie die Pflege, die für ein volles Jahr nach einer Hornhauttransplantation erforderlich ist.
Cornea-Help bietet auch Unterstützung und Hilfe während des Krankenhausaufenthaltes. Zwischen 2009 und Januar 2019, wurden mehr als 96 Personen aus fünf Ländern in Afrika (Elfenbeinküste, Liberia, Kenia, Ruanda, Uganda, Süd-Sudan) bei Hornhauttransplantationen oder anderweitigen direkten Hilfen in Hornhauterkrankenungen unterstützt.
Cornea-Help verbindet auch Rand-Gruppen und Institutionen die in Not sind oder wo akuter Bedarf an Hilfe besteht (wie Schulen für Sehbehinderte und Albinos) mit potenziellen Spendern. Die Einzelpersonen fördern dann speziell „ihre(n) Schützling(e)“, für ihre weitere Ausbildung und/oder die nötige medizinische Weiter-Versorgung.
What we do!
Cornea Help works by linking people in need of such medical interventions to save or improve their eyesight with experienced medical specialists, such as ophthalmologist / surgeon Dr. Viashwanatha N. Gokhale at the Lions Medical Centre (Dr. Kanubhai Babla Eye & Laser Hospital) in Mombasa Kenya. Dr. John Nkurikye at RIIO-Rwanda (Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital) Kigali, Rwanda. It then organizes and finances medical examinations, treatment and post-treatment care, which is required for a full year following a corneal transplant.
Cornea Help also offers support and assistance during hospitalization.
Between 2009 and February 2019, more than 96 people from five countries in Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan) benefited from corneal transplants financed or otherwise supported by Corneal Help.
Cornea-Help e.V. also links marginal people and institutions in need (such as schools for the visually impaired) with prospective donors, who then sponsor them or individuals within them in need of support for further education or medical care.

Who funds Cornea Help?
Cornea Help has relied since it its inception in 2009 on donations from generous individuals and its members (membership costs EUR 25 per year). It has also received crucial support from the Lions Club of Wiesmoor, Germany, and German company’s. It receives no funding from government. Donations to Cornea-Help e.V. in Germany are tax deductible, as it is a registered charitable volunteer organization. Cornea Help maintains a strong relationship with its donors, which is based on trust and transparency. Cornea Help is present at every corneal transplant and donors are informed about all of these and about everything Cornea Help undertakes.
What Cornea Help aims to do
Our philosophy is simple. We believe that every human being should have the right to see the beauty of his or her surroundings and the world.
The aim of Cornea Help’s medical interventions is to ensure that people in need of corneal transplants in sub-Sahara Africa are not deprived of their right to sight – and all the livelihood benefits that brings – because of their marginalized or disadvantaged socio-economic situation or because they live in a country with poor medical care, a lack of qualified ophthalmologists or facilities, or in a country where infrastructure has been destroyed by war.

Cornea Help e.V. entwickelt und setzt auf starke Beziehungen, die auf Transparenz und Vertrauen mit all ihren Spendern baut.
Detaillierte Informationen über Aktivitäten und Ausgaben der NGO sind auf ihrer Website immer abrufbereit. Interessierte Personen die sich unsere Projektarbeit vor Ort in Afrika anschauen möchten, können sich gerne an unsere Reisen nach Ost- oder Westafrika anschließen. Bei jeder Operation ist jemand von Cornea Help e.V. anwesend und die Geber/Sponsoren erfahren persönliches Feedback. Wenn entweder Klaus oder Sigrid Renken nach Afrika, für die Operationen unter der Schirmherrschaft von Cornea Help e.V. reisen, tragen sie persönlich alle ihre eigenen Reisekosten, die sie der gemeinnützigen Organisation spenden.
